A Kansas cyclone carries Dorothy and her dog to a country of witches and talking beasts, where she sets off along a yellow brick road to ask the Wizard for a way home, gathering three companions who each believe they lack something essential. Published in 1900 as a deliberately American fairy tale, written without the moral instruction Baum disliked in the European ones.
