L. Frank Baum (1856-1919) was an American author who tried chicken breeding, acting, shopkeeping and trade journalism before publishing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1900. Its success led to thirteen further Oz books and a stage adaptation he helped write. He set out to make an American fairy tale, deliberately without the moralising he disliked in the European ones.
