Three Lives

Language: English (US)

Three linked novellas about working women in a fictional Baltimore: two German servants and Melanctha, a young Black woman whose story is the longest and most formally radical of the three. Stein's repetitive, present-tense prose was unlike anything else published in 1909. The Melanctha section uses racial language and characterisation of its period that is offensive to modern readers; the text is presented unaltered. Public domain in the EU (author died 1946).
