Emma Woodhouse, comfortable and certain of her own judgement, occupies herself arranging other people's marriages and is wrong about nearly every one of them, including her own. The comedy works by letting the reader see just far enough past her to watch the misreadings accumulate. Published in 1815, it is the most tightly constructed of Austen's novels and the one she expected readers to like least.
