William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was an English novelist born in Calcutta, who lost an inherited fortune to gambling and bank failures and turned to journalism, writing satire for Fraser's Magazine and Punch. Vanity Fair (1847-48) made his name and set him alongside Dickens as the leading novelist of the period. He illustrated much of his own work.
