Willa Cather (1873-1947) was an American novelist who moved from Virginia to the Nebraska plains as a child, and made the immigrant farming communities there the subject of O Pioneers! and My Antonia. She worked as a magazine editor in New York before writing full time, and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1923. Her later books turned to the Southwest and to the French colonial past of Quebec.
