Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) was an English novelist and playwright, a close friend and sometime collaborator of Charles Dickens, in whose magazines much of his best work first appeared. The Woman in White (1859) and The Moonstone (1868) established the sensation novel and did much to invent the English detective story. He wrote in chronic pain and was dependent on laudanum for much of his later life.
