Theodore Dreiser

1871–1945

Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) was an American novelist and journalist, the leading figure of the country's literary naturalism. Born into poverty in Indiana, he wrote for newspapers and magazines before Sister Carrie, whose refusal to punish its heroine for her choices led his own publisher to suppress it. He went on to write An American Tragedy and a body of social journalism, and spent much of his later life in political controversy.
