Stephen Crane (1871-1900) was an American novelist, poet and war correspondent who wrote The Red Badge of Courage (1895) at twenty-three, having never seen combat. Its success sent him to report on conflicts in Greece and Cuba, and he survived a shipwreck that produced his best-known story, The Open Boat. He died of tuberculosis in a German sanatorium at twenty-eight.
