Sarah Orne Jewett

1849–1909

Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909) was an American writer who accompanied her physician father on his rounds through coastal Maine as a child and spent her career recording those communities. The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896) is a sequence of linked sketches rather than a novel, and is the work she is remembered for. Willa Cather, who edited a later edition, regarded it as one of the durable American books.
