Samuel Butler

1835–1902

Samuel Butler (1835-1902) was an English author who refused to follow his father into the church, emigrated to New Zealand to farm sheep, and returned with enough money to write, paint and argue with Darwin's supporters. Erewhon, a satirical utopia, appeared in 1872. The Way of All Flesh, an unsparing account of a Victorian clerical family closely modelled on his own, he kept unpublished until after his death.
