Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English writer born in Bombay, who returned to India as a young journalist and drew on it for the stories that made him famous before he was twenty-five. He wrote The Jungle Book, Kim and the Just So Stories, and in 1907 became the first English-language winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. His standing has been contested ever since for its entanglement with British imperialism.
