O. Henry was the pen name of William Sydney Porter (1862-1910), an American short-story writer who began publishing seriously while serving a prison sentence for embezzlement from a Texas bank. Moving to New York, he produced hundreds of stories about ordinary city life, written at a rate of one a week and known for their reversals in the final paragraph.
