Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) was a Spanish novelist, poet and soldier who was wounded at the battle of Lepanto and then spent five years enslaved in Algiers after his ship was captured by corsairs. He worked as a tax collector and was imprisoned for irregularities in his accounts before publishing the first part of Don Quixote in 1605, at fifty-seven. It is commonly described as the first modern novel.
