Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949) was a Belgian playwright, poet and essayist writing in French, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911. His symbolist dramas, including Pelleas et Melisande, were set to music by Debussy and others. He also wrote a series of philosophical natural histories, of which The Life of the Bee is the best known.
