Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) was an Anglo-Irish clergyman who published the first volumes of Tristram Shandy in 1759 and became a literary celebrity in his late forties. The book digresses so persistently that its narrator is barely born by the third volume, and it plays openly with the physical book itself. He died of tuberculosis before finishing it.
