L. M. Montgomery (1874-1942) was a Canadian novelist raised by her grandparents on Prince Edward Island, the setting she used for almost everything she wrote. Anne of Green Gables (1908) was rejected by several publishers before becoming an immediate international success, and she produced a further twenty novels along with poetry and journals. She wrote much of it while carrying out the duties of a minister's wife in rural Ontario.
