Knut Hamsun

1859–1952

Knut Hamsun (1859-1952) was a Norwegian novelist who worked as a labourer, tram conductor and farmhand in Norway and America before Hunger (1890) established him, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920 for Growth of the Soil. His early novels pioneered the interior monologue that later writers built on. He supported the German occupation of Norway and met Hitler, and was tried after the war; his reputation has been argued over on those grounds ever since.
