Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was a Polish-born British novelist who spent twenty years at sea, rising to master mariner, before settling in England to write. He wrote in English, his third language, producing Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, Nostromo and The Secret Agent. His fiction returns to isolated men tested beyond the reach of the rules they were formed by, and his command of an acquired language became a standard example of the possibility.
