John Buchan

1875–1940

John Buchan (1875-1940) was a Scottish novelist, barrister and public servant who wrote fiction in the margins of a career in colonial administration, wartime propaganda and politics. The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915), written while he was ill in bed, established the modern chase thriller. He ended his career as Governor General of Canada, as Lord Tweedsmuir.
