James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) was an American novelist, expelled from Yale and sent to sea before settling into writing on the strength of a wager with his wife. The five Leatherstocking Tales, following the frontiersman Natty Bumppo, were the first American fiction to find a large European audience. His portrayal of Native American characters has been contested from Mark Twain's time onwards.
