Hugh Lofting

1886–1947

Hugh Lofting (1886-1947) was an English author and civil engineer who invented Doctor Dolittle in letters home to his children from the trenches of the First World War, wanting something to write about other than what he was seeing. He published twelve Dolittle books, illustrating them himself, and won the Newbery Medal in 1923. He was a committed pacifist, which shows plainly in the later volumes.
