Henry James (1843-1916) was an American-born novelist who settled in England and took British citizenship in the last year of his life. He wrote more than twenty novels on the encounter between American innocence and European experience, from Daisy Miller and The Portrait of a Lady to the dense late works, along with criticism that helped establish the novel as an art with its own theory. His ghost story The Turn of the Screw remains his most read short fiction.
