Henry Fielding (1707-1754) was an English novelist and dramatist whose stage satires on the government provoked the Licensing Act of 1737, which effectively ended his theatrical career. He retrained as a barrister, became a London magistrate, and helped found the Bow Street Runners, an early professional police force. Tom Jones (1749) is the major work of his second career as a novelist.
