Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was an American writer and abolitionist from a prominent Connecticut clerical family. Uncle Tom's Cabin, serialised in 1851-52 in response to the Fugitive Slave Act, sold in numbers no American novel had reached before and became a central text of the antislavery campaign. She wrote some thirty further books, though none approached its reach.
