H. Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was an English novelist who spent his twenties in colonial administration in South Africa, and turned that experience into the lost-world adventure novel. King Solomon's Mines (1885) was written on a wager that he could match Treasure Island, and was followed by She and a long series featuring Allan Quatermain. He spent his later years as an authority on agriculture and land reform.
