George Egerton was the pen name of Mary Chavelita Dunne Bright (1859-1945), an Australian-born Irish writer associated with the New Woman fiction of the 1890s. Her story collections Keynotes and Discords treated women's inner lives with a frankness that made her both celebrated and attacked. She had lived in Norway and knew Hamsun, and her 1899 English version of Hunger was the first.
