G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936) was an English journalist, critic and novelist of enormous output, who wrote essays, biography, theology and detective fiction with equal facility. He created the priest-detective Father Brown and wrote the metaphysical thriller The Man Who Was Thursday (1908). His prose is built on paradox, and he was as well known in his lifetime for public debates with Shaw and Wells as for his books.
