Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849-1924) was an English-American novelist and playwright who emigrated from Manchester to Tennessee as a teenager and began publishing stories to support her family. She wrote widely for adults, but is remembered for three children's books: Little Lord Fauntleroy, A Little Princess and The Secret Garden (1911). She was an early and determined litigant for authors' dramatic rights in their own work.
