Emily Brontë (1818-1848) was an English novelist and poet, the middle of the three writing Brontë sisters. She published under the pen name Ellis Bell, first in a jointly issued volume of poems and then with her only novel, Wuthering Heights (1847), whose violence and structural daring unsettled its first reviewers. She died of tuberculosis the following year, aged thirty, and the novel's reputation as a classic was established largely after her death.
