Ellen Marriage (1865-1946) was an English translator who produced the first substantially complete English version of Balzac's Comédie humaine, some forty volumes issued in the 1890s. She published the franker novels under the pseudonym James Waring, her publisher having judged the material unsuitable for a woman's name. Her versions remained the standard English Balzac for decades.
