Eleanor Marx Aveling (1855-1898) was a British socialist activist, trade union organiser and translator, the youngest daughter of Karl Marx. She worked as her father's secretary, helped organise the London gasworkers and dockers, and translated from French, German and Norwegian. Her English Madame Bovary, published in 1886, was the first and remained the standard version for decades.
