D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English novelist, poet and essayist, the son of a Nottinghamshire miner, whose work drew directly on that upbringing in Sons and Lovers (1913). He spent much of his adult life abroad in what he called a savage pilgrimage, and several of his books were suppressed or prosecuted in Britain. He died of tuberculosis at forty-four, his reputation still largely a matter of scandal.
