Constance Garnett (1861-1946) was an English translator who produced the first widely read English versions of the Russian novelists, some seventy volumes of Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Turgenev, Chekhov and Gogol. She learned Russian from political exiles in London and travelled to Russia to meet Tolstoy. Later translators have criticised her for smoothing the distinct voices of her authors into a single Victorian English, but her versions introduced Russian literature to the anglophone world.
