Baroness Emma Orczy (1865-1947) was a Hungarian-born British novelist and playwright whose family left Hungary for London when she was a child. The Scarlet Pimpernel began as a play, and only after it succeeded on stage did the novel find its audience; she wrote more than a dozen sequels. She also created the Old Man in the Corner, an early armchair detective.
