Arthur Machen (1863-1947) was a Welsh author and journalist whose supernatural fiction of the 1890s, set against the Welsh countryside of his childhood, drew accusations of degeneracy from reviewers and admiration from later writers of weird fiction. He worked as a cataloguer, translator and actor between books. His wartime story The Bowmen was so widely believed that the Angels of Mons became an accepted legend.
