Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) was a Russian physician, short-story writer and dramatist who supported his family by writing comic sketches while at medical school and never gave up practising medicine. He wrote several hundred stories that largely dispensed with plot in favour of mood and implication, along with the four late plays that reshaped modern theatre. He died of tuberculosis at forty-four.
