Anthony Hope

1863–1933

Anthony Hope (1863-1933) was an English novelist and barrister who gave up a promising legal and political career after The Prisoner of Zenda (1894) succeeded. Its invented central European kingdom of Ruritania was so widely imitated that the name became a genre. He wrote some thirty further books and was knighted for propaganda work during the First World War.
