Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) was an English novelist who made the Gothic romance respectable and extremely profitable, commanding fees far above her contemporaries. Her method, which she called the explained supernatural, raises terror through atmosphere and then accounts for every apparent haunting by natural means. The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794) was popular enough for Jane Austen to build Northanger Abbey around a heroine who has read it.
